A day of gains for the newly formed Congress of the People (COPE), the breakaway organisation of the ANC, ended in chaos last night when ANC supporters stormed a public meeting in Verulam and police were called in to contain the situation.

Former ANC chairperson Mosioua Lekota, a co-leader of the new party, was due to address the meeting but failed to arrive because of security concerns.
